Trinity Lutheran 68 Kennedy 57
It was raining 3’s in the high desert. In front of a full house for their first home game, Trinity Lutheran made a record 10 3 point baskets on their way to a solid 68-57 win over 2A Kennedy from Mt Angel.
After falling behind 0-4, the Saints rallied for a quick 8 points and did not trail the rest of the game. Cash Niemeyer and Scooty Gilbert each hit two 3’s in the first quarter and the Saints (4-0) led 14-10.
The second quarter was back and forth. The Trojans (1-1) cut the lead to one point at 23-22 but a quick 3 by Niemeyer helped lead the Saints to a 30-26 lead at half. Scoring at this point was fairly balanced as Niemeyer had 11, Gilbert 9 and Matt Eidler 8.
Trinity started the third quarter strong on a 7-0 run and they opened the lead to 49-40 behind Eidler and Niemeyer who each score 8 in quarter.
Kennedy never got closer than 7 points in the fourth quarter and the Saints put the game away at the free throw line. Despite not attempting any free throws in the first 3 quarters, a strong 10-14 effort eliminated any chance of a late comeback.
Cash Niemeyer led Trinity with 22 points including shooting 5-7 from 3 and contributed 4 assists and 5 rebounds. Matt Eidler contributed 20 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 blocks. Scooty Gilbert shot 4-9 from 3 (16-33 ytd) adding 15 points and 6 assists while Niko Uto was strong in the second half grabbing 7 of his 9 rebounds.
Go Saints!
