From the Latin word for “coming”, Advent is a time of preparation and anticipation for the coming of Christ both in the past in His incarnation as the baby Jesus, but also in the future with His promised second coming as Christ Triumphant. At Trinity, we celebrate Advent with weekly Wednesday worship experiences and during our Sunday morning worship.
We want you to grow in God’s word and grow in community this Advent Season. Each week on Sunday mornings we will pass out a new advent card that has scripture, a reflective devotion, an activity, and a discussion question. Feel free to work through each week on your own, but we greatly encourage and challenge you to find a friend or a family to join you. Take photos and share them with us as we root ourselves in God’s word and grow in the community as we prepare our hearts for Christmas.
Missed a Sunday or not in person that week?
No problem, each week will be available for download here on our website.
Read: Matthew 3:1-12
Reflect: The whole creation is waiting, not for the children of God to go to heaven, but for Christ to return and make creation free of corruption. Then it will be, once more, the dwelling place of God’s sons and daughters…” Read the Full Devotion Here
Experience: Make a bucket list of Christmas traditions or activities you enjoy, and then get together with friends or family and go do one or some or all of them.
Discuss: If Christ was returning right NOW, what would your immediate reaction be? Would you be excited, scared or bummed out? Why do you feel that way?
Read: Isaiah 11:1-10
Reflect: “Our Savior does not leave us to flounder in our sin. Isaiah tells us: ‘The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him–the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD… ’(Isaiah 11:2). By his promise, spoken at our Baptism and renewed again and again for us in his gospel, Jesus creates and sustains new life in us.” – Read the Full Devotion Here
Experience: Get together with friends or family members this week and go for a walk or drive. See if you can find signs of life among the fading fall colors, look for Christmas lights, or play in the possible snow. Be sure and take pictures!
Discuss: Jesus comes from the root of Jesse and becomes the branch that bears fruit and brings us life. Was it important that He be born of Jesse’s lineage? Why?
Read: Luke 1:46-55
Reflect: “In simple faith Mary casts herself upon God, willing to do His will whatever the cost. Mary lets go the world’s most frequent prayer, “Thy will be changed,” in order to pray the world’s greatest prayer “Thy will be done”. With these words Mary becomes Jesus’ first disciple, His disciple before she was His mother. This is what is always required to be a disciple of Jesus: obedience to the Father’s will.” – Read the Full Devotion Here
Experience: Grab a group of friends or family and find an active way to care for someone who might be feeling isolated or marginalized. Ideas: Share a meal with a friend who is struggling, go and serve at a local homeless shelter, invite someone to your house who lives alone.
Discuss: Can you think of someone who showed you love when you felt isolated or marginalized? How can you show that same love of Jesus to someone in need this Christmas season?
Read: Romans 8:31-39
Reflect: “There’s something special about with. Teammates say, “I’m with you,” and you know they’ll do everything in their power to help the team. Friends say, “I’ll be with you,” and you know that they’re going to be there for you in good times and in bad.God also expresses his love in terms of with, but sadly, the people he most wants to be with sometimes act as if they’d rather do without him in their lives.” – Read the Full Devotion Here
Experience: Write a letter to a person you love. Tell the person how you are willing to always be “with them” in the face of anything. In Romans 8:37-39, does Paul cover everything that can seem to come between God’s love and us? Does God being with us have a limit? Reread Romans 8:31 and 32.
